HISTORY OF GINJA LIQUEUR
As one of the most representative and tradicional drinks of Portugal,
“Licor de Ginja” or “Ginjinha”, is wildly appreciated by the Portuguese people and fascinates all those who visit and taste it.
The Liqueur is obtained from Ginja, a small fruit of red colour and
bittersweet flavor, which originated in Asia and arrived in Portugal around the XV century.
It is stated that the origin of Ginja Liqueur comes from an acient recipe created by monks, who infused the Ginja in Brandy and use the mixture for medicinal practices, as was common at the time.
Later the consumption of Ginja Liqueur was generalized throughout the country and became especially popular in the city of Lisbon, amongst Poets, Fadistas and Sailors.
Nowadays the “Licor de Ginja” or “Ginjinha” can be found in the bars, restaurants and coffee shop counters all over the city, fascinating with it’s tradition, taste and quality.
